Please be assured that all currently live (e.g. previously purchased) GAP insurance policies are entirely unaffected.

For some time now the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has been trying to rein in the rampant mis-selling of and overcharging for GAP insurance by UK motor dealers.

On a national scale, the FCA's historical attempts to address this have done little to curb certain motor dealers abusing their market position and on Tuesday January 23rd 2024, the FCA finally took a much harder stance by issuing temporary cease & desist notices with a two week notice period.

As our long-standing customers will attest, we've been a champion of the GAP insurance-buying UK consumer for almost 20 years now, providing both considerably better value & better quality GAP insurance policies than those offered by most motor dealers. It is to this end that we welcome the FCA's long overdue tough stance. We believe it genuinely has the potential to be of considerably positive benefit to consumers.

The immediate problem, for us, is that instead of targeting motor dealers specifically, the FCA's cease & desist notices went directly to the GAP insurance underwriters that permit motor dealers to sell their GAP policies. To our surprise (we only found out after January 23rd!) the underwriter of our GAP insurance policies was providing GAP insurance to UK motor dealers as well as us. Our underwriter is therefore one of the insurance companies that has been instructed to temporarily stop offering new GAP insurance policies as of midnight on February 6th 2024. The FCA hasn't yet permitted any differentiation between their (our underwriter's) motor dealer market and, their entirely unrelated (much better value etc) direct-to-consumer market (us).

Not only that but, the FCA has temporarily banned most other GAP insurance underwriters from taking on new brokers and, we're finding that what other underwriters remain, are currently too scared (of the FCA) to properly entertain taking on new brokers, choosing instead to "wait a while" to "see what happens".

So... after almost 20 years of doing exactly what the FCA say a GAP insurance broker should be doing - something we've been doing since before the FCA was even "a thing" - we find ourselves caught up, as collateral damage, in the middle of an argument between the FCA and certain "bad actor" motor dealers elsewhere in the industry.

07/02/2024 00:01 - Right now... the entire industry is awaiting further guidance from the FCA.

It's possible that by working with the FCA to curb the overcharging of GAP insurance by motor dealers, those underwriters who are currently temporarily banned from writing new GAP policies will have their ban lifted. Accounting for the fact that this is entirely out of our hands though and, we've no idea how long this might take, we're in talks with various underwriters with a view to sourcing GAP insurance "capacity" elsewhere.

The issue, is that these things take time. The next few days and weeks will be... interesting.

One way or another though, we'll be back to "business as usual" as soon as we can be.

07/02/2024 12:00 - Update - We're informed this morning that some other specialist brokers of GAP insurance - who over the weekend found themselves in a similar position to us - were yesterday granted a reprieve by way of the FCA permitting the brokers' underwriters to continue offering GAP insurance via their online brokers only. We don't yet have any such news from our policy underwriters.

08/02/2024 16:45 - Update - We've received confirmation that we ARE permitted to honour GAP insurance quotes given in the 30 days leading up to 06/02/2024 (inclusive) and we can also offer renewals of existing Top-Up GAP insurance policies.

08/03/2024 16:37 - Update - We're still unable to provide quotes for new GAP insurance policies and frustratingly, we're led to believe that it may yet be a few weeks before this situation changes.

We ARE however able to offer renewals of Top-Up GAP insurance policies and if you're changing your vehicle before your policy has expired, we ARE permitted (subject to eligibility) to permit you transfer the remaining term of your GAP insurance policy to your new vehicle.

If you have a Top-Up GAP insurance policy approaching expiry (or recently expired) or you've recently changed your vehicle and wish to transfer the remaining term of your GAP insurance policy to your new vehicle, please call us on 01484 490095 for assistance.
